WP-1 Innovative Methods and Instruments in Radiotherapy
Recent developments in radiotherapy, such as Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), ion therapy, and European Syncrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) studies on mini and micro X-ray beams, tend to improve dose targeting within tumors while sparing surrounding healthy tissues. The control of the delivered dose thus becomes a crucial point of quality assurance. Indeed, deviations from the planned dose may be the consequence of poor patient positioning, uncertainties in the patient's morphology (eg an anatomical modification during treatment) or errors in stoichiometric calibration (conversion of X-ray CT numbers in tissue composition).
Working on the improvement of ion therapy and IMRT are the motives of the WP-1, a challenge also shared by FP7 ENVISION and ENTERVISION projects in which the IPNL, Creatis, Liris and LPC-Clermont-Ferrand laboratories are well involved. The targeted modalities are PET (Positron Emission Tomography), prompt gamma imaging, imaging proton-vertex interactions and connected proton CT (Computed Tomography).
